About the Role
The Adult Education ESL Instructor provides day-to-day instruction and supervision for adult learners, helping students build English language, basic skills, and workforce readiness for employment and self-sufficiency while supporting family literacy. Instruction may be delivered in traditional classrooms and online formats and includes integrating digital literacy, study skills, and career preparation into the curriculum.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach adult learners (multiple skill levels) in ESL/ABE subject areas; incorporate workforce preparation and career readiness.
- Prepare lessons and materials aligned to program curriculum; blend online resources and digital tools into instruction.
- Regularly evaluate learners’ progress; maintain accurate attendance and student records; provide notes and class summaries as requested.
- Communicate with staff, advisors/case managers, and program leadership; participate in meetings and events to align instruction and monitor outcomes.
- Complete a minimum of 8 hours of professional development annually (grant requirement).
- Travel to campus and satellite locations as needed; other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or a closely related field.
- Two years of experience working with adult education, basic skills, or literacy programs serving diverse populations.
- Current New Jersey teaching license and at least one year of prior teaching experience (secondary, higher ed, or adult ed).
- Knowledge of standardized assessment instruments and effective adult-education pedagogy.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (MOS) and database systems; experience with classroom/online platforms and educational technology.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong communication skills.
