A new on-call teaching opportunity is now available at the Toms River main campus for an Adult Education ESL Instructor. This role supports adult learners who are building English language skills tied directly to work, family stability, and long-term self-sufficiency.
This position sits within the Workforce Development and Strategic Partnerships division and plays a direct role in strengthening Ocean County’s local workforce.
Teaching Adult English Language Learners in Ocean County
Adult learners served through OCAC come from a wide range of backgrounds. Many are balancing work, family responsibilities, and education while building English proficiency for everyday life and employment. The Adult Education ESL Instructor works with learners at varying academic levels, helping them gain literacy skills that support job readiness and continued education.
Instruction takes place on an as-needed basis during semester-based sessions and may include both in-person and online formats. Classes are designed to connect language learning with real-world application, including workplace communication, digital literacy, and career preparation.

What the Instructor Will Do
The Adult Education ESL Instructor provides direct instruction and ongoing support to adult learners focused on literacy, workforce readiness, and personal growth.
Key responsibilities include classroom and online instruction in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science, with an emphasis on English language development. Instruction supports students working toward basic skills improvement and, in some cases, high school equivalency preparation.
Instructors design and deliver lessons aligned with program curriculum, integrating digital tools, online resources, and workforce preparation concepts. Career readiness, study skills, and practical life skills are woven into daily instruction.
The role also involves evaluating student progress using curriculum-based assessments, maintaining accurate attendance and student records, and documenting class outcomes. Collaboration is a core part of the position, with regular communication alongside advisors, case managers, and program leadership to support student success.
Instructors participate in meetings, curriculum development activities, and professional development to ensure instruction remains aligned with program goals and community needs.
Minimum Qualifications for This Role
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in education or a closely related field. Applicants should bring at least two years of experience working within adult education, basic skills, or literacy programs that serve diverse populations.
Experience with standardized assessments, adult-focused instructional strategies, and educational technology is required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, databases, email, and digital learning platforms is expected, along with the ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment.
Preferred Experience and Skills
Candidates with a master’s degree in education or a related discipline are encouraged to apply. Additional strengths include subject-area expertise, especially in math, and familiarity with adult education platforms such as Canvas, Aztek, or Burlington English.
Bilingual instructors bring added value to this role, particularly when supporting multilingual learners across Ocean County communities.
