Housing and Residential Supports Workshop for New Jersey Families on May 4

A warm, photorealistic scene of a cozy suburban New Jersey home at sunset, featuring a front porch with soft lighting and a well-kept green lawn. In the foreground, an older couple and a young adult sit together on wicker chairs, chatting comfortably and smiling, suggesting a close family bond and thoughtful conversation about the future. The sky glows with soft pink and orange hues, and the overall mood feels calm, hopeful, and welcoming.

A free virtual workshop is being offered to families across Central New Jersey on May 4. The event is focused on housing options for adults with developmental disabilities. It will be hosted on Zoom at 6:30 PM and is open to all adult participants.

This 90-minute session is presented by the law firm Hinkle, Prior, Fischer and Oberweis. Their attorneys have served families of individuals with disabilities since 1974.

Why Housing Planning Matters for New Jersey Families

For many parents in Ocean County and across the state, one question looms large. Where will my child live after I am no longer here? That concern is shared by thousands of families throughout Central New Jersey.

Housing is often considered the most stressful part of long-term planning. Options can feel limited, and the process is rarely straightforward. State agencies, Medicaid rules, and waitlists all add layers of confusion.

This workshop was designed with those frustrations in mind. Practical guidance will be shared in a format that is accessible to all.

What Will Be Covered During the Workshop

Division of Developmental Disabilities Housing Options

An overview of DDD housing programs will be provided during the session. Group homes and supervised apartments are among the traditional paths explored. However, those are not the only choices available to families.

Self-Directed and Unlicensed Settings

Creative housing arrangements are also being pursued by families across New Jersey. Self-directed services and unlicensed settings are growing in popularity. The benefits and challenges of these alternatives will be discussed in detail.

Medicaid’s Role in Residential Funding

Medicaid is considered a vital piece of the residential funding puzzle. Attendees will learn how it is used to support housing placements. Common misunderstandings about Medicaid eligibility will also be addressed.

Safeguarding Services and Avoiding Pitfalls

Families are often caught off guard by gaps in the system. Strategies for protecting a loved one’s services will be shared. Tips for working with state agencies more effectively will also be covered.

A question-and-answer segment is included at the end of the presentation.
