Job fairs are one of the best opportunities for job seekers to connect directly with employers, learn about available positions, and make a lasting first impression. But simply showing up isn’t always enough to get the most out of the experience.
Chris Bristow from the Ocean County Career Center recently shared practical advice to help job seekers prepare for an upcoming career fair at The Mainland in Manahawkin, where over 50 employers will be present. If you’re searching for your first job, changing careers, or re-entering the workforce, these tips can help you approach the event with confidence and maximize your chances of success.
What Is a Job Fair?
A job fair is an event where multiple employers gather in one place to meet potential candidates. Instead of submitting applications online and waiting for responses, job seekers can interact directly with recruiters, hiring managers, and company representatives.
For this event, Ocean County Career Center proudly partnered with the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce and the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development.
At this particular career fair, attendees will have the chance to:
- Meet over 50 employers
- Learn about a variety of industries and career paths
- Share resumes with hiring managers
- Ask questions about roles, training, and company culture
- Build connections that could lead to interviews or future opportunities

Even if an employer isn’t hiring immediately, the conversation you have today could lead to a job opportunity later.
Tip 1: Research Employers Before You Go
Preparation begins before you even walk through the doors. Job seekers are encouraged to review the list of employers attending the event and identify five to ten companies they are most interested in. Doing some basic research about these organizations helps you:
- Ask informed questions
- Show genuine interest in the company
- Focus your time effectively at the event
Once you arrive at the job fair, take a moment to walk around and locate the companies you want to visit first. This will help you plan your route and prioritize your conversations.
Tip 2: Bring the Right Materials
Preparation also means having the right tools with you. Here are a few essentials to bring to a job fair:
Multiple copies of your resume. Bring 10–15 printed copies of your resume. Many employers still prefer receiving a resume in person so they can review it immediately. If you’re unsure about your resume or want to strengthen it before the event, the Ocean County Career Center offers resume assistance and guidance to help job seekers stand out.
A fully charged phone. Your phone may be needed during the event. Some employers use QR codes or online applications that require you to apply digitally, even after submitting a resume. Keep your phone charged so you can:
- Complete online applications
- Access company information
- Save contact details
A folder or portfolio. Bring a folder to store:
- Employer brochures
- Business cards
- Extra resumes
- Notes about companies you spoke with
You may discover new companies during the event that you hadn’t considered before.
Tip 3: Prepare Your Elevator Pitch
One of the most powerful tools you can bring to a job fair isn’t a document, it’s your elevator pitch. An elevator pitch is a 30–40 second introduction that explains:
- Who you are
- Your background or experience
- What type of role you’re looking for
- What makes you a strong candidate
For example, you might introduce yourself like this:
“Hi, my name is Chris. I have experience working with customers and coordinating events, and I’m currently looking for opportunities in recruiting or workforce development where I can help connect people with meaningful careers.”
Your resume provides details, but your elevator pitch is what helps employers remember you. Try recording yourself practicing your pitch on your phone and review it. Ask friends or family for feedback and adjust until it feels natural.
Tip 4: Dress to Make a Strong First Impression
First impressions matter, especially at job fairs. Your appearance helps employers quickly assess your professionalism and readiness for the workplace.
Suggested attire for men:
- Button-down shirt
- Tie
- Khakis or dress pants
- Clean, professional shoes
Suggested attire for women:
- Professional blouse
- Slacks or professional skirt
- Appropriate footwear
Even if you’re pursuing a hands-on or trade job, dressing professionally shows that you take the opportunity seriously. Remember: a job fair is often like an informal interview.
Tip 5: Approach Employers with Confidence
Talking to recruiters can feel intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple approach works best:
- Introduce yourself
- Mention the position or company
- Start a conversation
Think of the interaction like speaking with a new acquaintance. You don’t need to memorize a script, just be genuine, confident, and respectful.
Tip 6: Ask Good Questions
Employers appreciate candidates who ask thoughtful questions. Some helpful questions include:
- What qualities do you look for in a successful candidate?
- What roles are you currently hiring for?
- What does training look like for new employees?
- What are the next steps in the hiring process?
Avoid simply reading your resume aloud. Instead, highlight key experiences and let the conversation flow naturally.
Tip 7: Take Notes and Collect Contact Information
During the event, you may speak with 10–15 different employers, which can make it hard to remember each conversation. Remember to stay organized and collect business cards when you can. Writing a memorable detail about the recruiter on the back of their card can also help you recall your conversation later.
Tip 8: Follow Up After the Job Fair
Your job search doesn’t end when the event ends. Following up shows initiative and helps employers remember you. When following up, keep your message short and professional. Remember to reference where you met them and that you’re following up on your previous conversation.
You can follow up with a phone call first and then an email if necessary.
