The Ocean County Utilities Authority is hiring Utility Workers at its Bayville and West Creek facilities. These positions perform general labor that supports daily operations and maintenance across the Authority.

Job Overview

The Utility Worker position involves general labor within the Authority’s operations and maintenance departments. The role supports all aspects of daily facility upkeep, including process maintenance, preventive servicing, cleaning, and assisting other employees with complex or heavy tasks. This position is physically demanding and requires working both indoors and outdoors in varied environmental conditions.

Utility Workers report directly to a Shift Supervisor and are classified as non-exempt union employees under the United Steelworkers (USW). Each employee works a standard 40-hour week within the Central, North, or South Division depending on operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

Utility Workers perform a variety of essential tasks that support the wastewater treatment process and facility operations. Typical duties include:

  • Cleaning and maintaining tanks, pumps, and related process equipment.
  • Performing carbon changes and removing grit, grease, and debris.
  • Assisting operations staff with preventive maintenance, such as exercising valves and cleaning aeration systems.
  • Helping prepare equipment and sites for Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) inspections.
  • Supporting the Pump Station Crew and Maintenance Department with repairs and routine servicing.
  • Participating in confined space entries for maintenance tasks.
  • Handling chemicals safely as part of treatment processes.
  • Using fall protection and other personal safety gear while working at heights or in confined areas.
  • Completing housekeeping and custodial duties to maintain a clean work environment.
  • Providing assistance in the Solids Handling Facility when required.
  • Performing painting, snow removal, and other physical tasks as assigned.

These activities require teamwork, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety. Utility Workers often operate hand tools, power tools, and industrial cleaning equipment and must comply with all Authority safety protocols and training requirements.
